Apex Pier Caps By The Decking Block Company

We supply high quality four way apex pier caps to the domestic and construction sectors. Our apex pier caps are available in a range of sizes – perfect for your requirements, and delivered to your door with no fuss or hassle. See the datasheet for full information.

Our apex pier caps are designed with a double slope to allow water run off in both directions. Drip Grooves (where applicable) are installed on both edges to channel rainfall away from brickwork. On smaller coping stones that do not have drip groves, these can be added by special request.

Manufactured from high strength concrete with a smooth finish, available in Portland Grey.

PLEASE NOTE – Variation in both size and colour may occur during the curing process

All our wall coping stones are Portland grey wet cast concrete using high strength cement CEM I 52.5N pure grade cement, packaged with care with small packaging blocks between each coping along with a cardboard outer sleeve with water proof cover so the customer receives their order in the best possible condition.

All wall copings should be cast using CEM1 52.5N due to the purpose the coping is full filling (Keeping your wall cavity dry), some company’s may offer a thinner cheaper porous coping using a lower grade cement which can often result in water ingress creeping into cavity.

DIY coping stone installation tips:-

  1. Mortar mix ratio 3 building sand : 1 cement using a plasticizer, the plasticizer’s job is to reduce the water you add to the mix which in turn helps reduce possible shrinkage of the mortar joints during curing.
  2. Try not to lay copings on a very hot day as this can dry the mortar to fast.
  3. Always dampen the top of the wall along with the under side of each coping before laying your mortar to maximise adhesion. Small amount of PVA bond can be added to improve adhesion and also tensile/flexural strength of the cured concrete.
  4. If laying down on a parapet cavity wall, bridge the cavity DPC with a hi-load damp proof course there on two types of D.P.C one plastic and one bitumen, the hi-load bitumen style is better at gripping your mortar and help to anchor down the copings your laying. The bitumen DPC’s job is to direct any water that was to ever get past the coping over years to come, out of the wall, preventing moisture damage to the inner leaf, and prevent the full fill insulation becoming saturated. Look at it as a secondary barrier!
  5. When laying your hi-load DPC bed out your mortar along the wall approximately 8mm thick on both brick and brick or block & brick lay down your DPC and run your trowel flat over the DPC pushing down tight, trim any over hanging excess DPC 20mm shorter than the width of the wall then centralise the hi-load DPC on the wall, the mortar between the DPC left and right will connect creating a good contact. Repeat bedding out your mortar on the top of the hi-load DPC and position your copings. (So what’s happened is you have trapped the hi-load DPC between the two layers of mortar but allowed the mortar between the DPC to connect on the edges 10mm each side, this helping the copings never to slip on the DPC if copings are accidently  pushed side on).
  6. Always fill the perps / joints fully between each coping stone, try not to butt up to tight or allow mortar to dry to quickly.
